1 Logan's Run #4 cover STORY: South Dakota, the Black Hills, Crazy Horse Mt. The Maze car stops here, There is a sign about no trespassing on government property. A fawn is killed by a giant metal bird-a Mech Eagle-when the fawn breaks the beam of a pedestal, one of many around the mountain. The Eagles attack Logan and Jess. Logan jumps over Jess and gets his back ripped a bit. He blows up the Mech Eagles with a ripper from his gun. Jess cares for him. Logan falls asleep. Later, they keep moving, finding an overgrown trail into the heart of the mountain. They find the world map of the Thinker--Tangier, London, Macao, Capri, Beirut, El Quederef and Chateau Chinon, Wounded Knee. A dispensary in Chemnitz, a glasshouse in Shropshire, a callbox in Billings, Montana...the nervous system of the Earth. They pass a secton marked Cathedral JVC 6 degrees 49883 W. Complex LA, California, W. America. A siren sound and a Watchman robot comes. It doesn't attack them since they are at dead areas: Cathedral and Molly: Multi Operational Lower Life Unit VJK 8 degrees 1704 Pacific Ocean W. Hemisphere...Molly, a dead area. That is why the corridor is dark. They race away from it to the tunnel for Washington LLI 7 degrees 5644 District of Columbia E. America. The car out of Molly should have taken them here. Ballard must be in Washington. Logan uses his boot to distract the Watchman, a capsule robot that can fly. If they can get to stairs that go up above Thinker, they might get out. Logan shouts, "Run, damn you, run!" He throws his other boot to buy them some time. The pair reach the granite steps but the thing won't follow--the steps aren't energized. Someone was coming down the stairs at them. Logan hides with Jess at the curve of the steps, "I don't believe it! It's Francis!" Logan turns to ask Jess what it will be: will he kill Francis first or let Francis kill them both. He wants her to decide. He turns for her and finds her gone. She pops back and tells him she found a tunnel. The tunnel becomes too narrow, making Jess panic. Logan makes her go on, stretching. They pop out the side in the blind core of the mountain. Subterranean waters echoed around their feet. An underground stream probably cut this out of the rock. Jess needs to rest and Logan lets her. There were wet limestone columns, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone ridges. Hard claws clicked. Something plopped into a pool. A claw footed creature scuttled across Jess's leg. Logan detached the pearl endplate of his gun to expose the glowing power pack, giving them light. In shallow pools, salamanders and fish, the chamber was crawling with life: mold, fungi, harvestman spiders, beetles, wingless insects--thousands. The two flee the chamber. Jess can't go on and thinks they are going to die, "We're hopelessly lost. Admit it!" Logan does but notices they won't starve...there are plenty of fish. He realizes fish have eyes. They follow the stream out, wading up it, ducking their heads to avoid rock ceilings. Francis feels he has them trapped now. He sees them. They get out. Early afternoon: Pleasure gypsies ride on devilsticks flying in the sky, earring short sleeved vests, head rags, long hair, arm bands, gloves. They knock the gun from Logan's hand and a circle of jato fire goes around Logan. Their song, "Deesticker Jay lift me a day wanna me forever on a peegee way." Logan knew of Pleasure Gypsies, no one of which lived long enough for his crystal to turn black, sworn to die in red. Rutago, king, white silks, flat muscled, golden curls, a beauty. He also wore a tunic, bare beneath. Females wore satins and brocades and goldwired mesh, smelled of peaches. Big Dog Saloon, abandoned: their hide out, velvet couches, ivory chairs, green baize tables. Rutago had on a head rag, gloves and a belt over his tunic. Later, he came in with his shirt off, pants, a belt, and long hair in pigtails. He has a rubyrock he took from a merchantman. Hemadrone which he forces Jessica to drink. A girl uses a medikit to heal Logan's back, replacing the cuts with fresh synthaskin. Logan was given a clean shirt and boots. He must earn the antidote by becoming a loverman for the pleasure girls. Rutago takes Jessica with him. Rutago is a ribbon rider but also a loverman. The girls clean Logan with needle suds, injected with Everlove and asked to "wildme" by the girls. He had 6 orgasms. Rutago lay naked on a bed. Jessica remained wood and he left her angry. One girl (Graygirl) suggests they pull a finger nail or tooth of the Runnergirl. 4 Gypsies put Jessica on a bartop. Rutago calls him badfella and will not give him the antidote. Logan yells, "Enough!" He grabs Graygirl and says, "Give me the antidote or I break this bitch's back!" She tells him the antidote in her ring, third finger, left hand. Jess drinks it and is ordered out by Logan.
